Brenda Mutua & Caroline Wanjiku · July 2026 · 6 min read

When addiction or severe mental illness strikes a home, all public and medical attention naturally zooms onto the patient. Who supports the spouse who has depleted their savings trying to fund rehabilitation programs that failed?
Caregivers live in a perpetual state of hypervigilance. Over months and years, this relentless stress triggers compassion fatigue: an emotional blunting where love is replaced by resentment, profound guilt, and physical exhaustion.
